Our customer is a health spa and as such, they market themselves on the curative powers of the facilities provided at their centre. Due to the sensitive nature of the services they provide, they have asked not to be identified for this case study.
The cold water storage tanks which serve all cold outlets within the centre and the swimming pool and spa bath are fed by a 100 m borehole. When we started to receive elevated TVC results, it was clear that there was bacterial contamination.
What
We Did
Due to the sensitive nature of the issue, we knew we had to act promptly and discreetly to give the centre a solution to their problem. The tanks had already been cleaned and disinfected, as had the mains supply, so it was clear that we would need to look for a less obvious solution to bring the TVC counts back under control.
The solution we decided on was treatment by Chlorine Dioxide. Unlike chlorine and bromine based oxidising biocides, Chlorine Dioxide maintains full efficacy over a much wider pH range making it suitable for applications where traditional biocides are ineffective. The rate of disinfection by Chlorine Dioxide increases with rising pH. Chlorine Dioxide is capable of maintaining an active residual for a longer time than chlorine. This advantage of stability helps to protect remote sections of distribution systems and to prevent bacterial re-growth.
Chlorine Dioxide is a powerful disinfectant and excellent at destroying odours. This chemical has a considerably higher oxidising reduction potential than chlorine and can achieve destruction of such organic substances, virus, and spores which are not attacked by chlorine. Its sporicidal and virucidal effect is higher than that of chlorine at the same strength.
To ensure the cold water feed to the spa and other outlets was consistently free from bacteria, we then recommended that a chloridos sytem be installed. This ensures that chlorine dioxide is dosed between an agreed upper and lower limit and that the system is kept under control.
The ChloriDos system is fully pre-assembled for easy site installation and doses via water meter pulse or to set point. With a number of safety related features, it will ensure that bacterial contamination is eliminated swiftly and effectively. If any part of the system is found to be out of specification, a text message will be automatically generated to a pre-set mobile number to ensure that the issue is dealt with promptly. With an efficient reporting system, graphs can also be produced to show that the system is under control.
